Exporting 3ds Max assets for Lens

In 3ds Max, how you export content so it is viewable in Lens depends on the workflow and the version of 3ds Max:

For a Specular/Gloss workflow, use 3ds Max’s Legacy Standard Shader.  Ensure that the new material is applied to your model and then export it in .FBX format.

Using 3ds Max’s Legacy Standard Shader

For a Metal/Roughness workflow, follow the instructions for the version of Max you are using:

If you are using Max 2023, use the new glTF shader, place your maps in the corresponding slots, apply the shader to your asset, and export the model in .glTF format.

If you are using a version prior to Max 2023, make sure all of your maps are at the same resolution to prevent stretching and then convert your Metal/Roughness maps to Specular/Gloss maps using an application such as Photoshop.  For more information on converting these maps, see Map conversion tips.  When your maps are converted,  use the Specular/Gloss workflow detailed above and export the model.

Now you can import the model into Kraken and view it in Lens by following these steps:

  1. Import the model:
    – To add the model file to an existing Kraken asset, select the asset, go to the Files tab of the Preview panel, and add the model.
    – To add the model file to a new asset, click the + New button and import the model.
  2. Select the asset, and under its thumbnail image click View this model in 3D.
